Today, I had the pleasure of visiting York University with my son Will as he considers his next steps in studying mathematics. One thing that struck me—aside from the impressive academic environment—was the sight of traditional blackboards in the mathematics department.


There’s something timeless about seeing complex equations worked out in chalk, a

reminder that deep thinking and problem-solving are at the heart of real progress. It’s a powerful symbol of the intellectual potential we have in this country.


In a world obsessed with chasing the next big thing, let’s not forget that the foundations of innovation are built on knowledge, discipline, and the ability to think deeply. We have so much talent in the UK—our universities, researchers, and students are world-class.


It’s time we talked up our strengths and backed our future generations with confidence.
